General Synopsis of Research Interests
In recent years I have been working to articulate my understanding of critical pedagogy and to implement its implications in the various spheres of education, with special attention to the Israeli-Palestinian context. These efforts have received international recognition such as a special issue of the leading journal in the field of philosophy of education devoted to my (and Peter McLaren's) alternatives in today's critical pedagogy (1999), and the inauguration of the International Network of Philosophers of Education (Sydney 2001), as well as translations of my work into Arabic, Portuguese, Serbian, and Polish. The most up-to-date edited book on critical theory and education opens with my article (Peters, 2004). In resent years I am leading in a series of international workshop a group composed of the central figures in today's critical educational theory (see link in my Website). This work faced me also with critique and controversial abroad and in Israel, in academic journals and in the media.
Currently I am at the beginning of reworking the philosophical foundations of my understanding of counter-education and critical pedagogy, and I am trying critically to reconstruct a new philosophy which I call "Diasporic philosophy". Diasporic philosophy might become a framework, a foundation, and an impetus for counter-education that will become a much richer alternative to traditional critical pedagogy. Today I am starting my attempt to articulate my unique philosophy of education; an alternative that does not represent a "postmodern" or a "modern" trend, a position that is beyond the dichotomies of critical/uncritical, negative/positive, religious-secular, immanent/transcendent. My earlier work has its birthmarks here, yet this is a new beginning in my work and in the present general trends in philosophy of education. In some of my new articles and in my latest (Hebrew) book "Toward a Diasporic Education" (Resling 2004) this alternative has received its first concrete articulations. It is, however, only the beginning of a lifetime project.
BOOKS IN PREPARATION1. Gur-Ze'ev, I. Diasporic Philosophy and Counter-Education. A systematic
articulation of Diasporic philosophy and counter education. This project has a
diachronic dimension, namely reconstructing the neglected representatives of
Diasporic philosophy and the history of philosophy, and a synchronic, analytic,
dimension.
